Bank USSD

Why USSD Banking Still Matters?

In many African countries, learning how to use USSD codes is one of the first things you do when you get a phone. From recharging airtime to subscribing to call plans, USSD is everywhere. In fact, it’s so essential that many people wouldn’t know banking without it.

But what exactly is USSD? And why is it still so important today? We took a closer look, with the help of Mohammed, one of our Technical Product Managers, to explore the question: What’s the point of USSD?

Where Did USSD Come From?

USSD started as a communication protocol in the early days of GSM mobile networks in the 90s. Telcos in Africa, where prepaid mobile plans became common, leveraged USSD to make services more accessible.

By 2007, it was used to launch mobile money services like Mpesa in East Africa. In Nigeria, GTBank popularized it in 2012 with *737#, followed by other banks.

How Does USSD Works

USSD allows users to directly interact with service providers via short codes. For instance, when you dial *5573# on Moniepoint, your request is routed through your mobile network to the bank. A simple menu then guides you through options like transferring money or buying airtime.

“Once you dial the code, we know what the customer wants but need more details, so we display a list of services,” explains Mohammed.

Despite the rise of apps and PoS systems, USSD remains crucial, with transaction volumes growing from N2.9 trillion in 2020 to N5 trillion in 2021.

Why Is USSD Still Relevant?

In 2022, Nigerians processed 515 million USSD transactions, highlighting its importance. USSD works for both smartphone and basic phone users, allowing millions without internet access to perform banking tasks.

“It’s easy, doesn’t need the internet, and works on any phone,” says Mohammed, emphasizing USSD’s simplicity and widespread use.

At Moniepoint, we see USSD as a key to financial inclusion, making banking accessible for all, regardless of device or internet access. We continue to build simple, secure services through USSD to serve millions of Nigerians.
